A Porcelain Journey through the Silk Road
One of the most popular Chinese porcelain vase shapes that is greatly sought after among porcelain collectors is the moon flask as it requires an exceptionally high level of skill to make.
The moon flask is characterized by a circular body, thus giving it the name, a flat base, a narrow cylindrical neck, and two arched side handles, which create an “embrace” between the neck and the body.
Known as 扁壺 (Biǎnhú) in Chinese, the Moon flask vase took its form from a Middle Eastern prototype of water flasks carried by travelers imported into China along the Silk Road. The shape had been developed over certain periods. However, it is during the Ming and Qing dynasties that the vase had been made in blue and white.
Typically, they were decorated with symbolic flowers or dragons in blue and white.
