A drum-shaped stool
A drum-shaped stool is found in classic Chinese furniture incorporated with daily life over 1,000 years in the history. This kind of classical seats was made in a variety of materials and designs in the Song Dynasty (960-1279) when it was popular for casual seating both indoors and outside. Chinese homes were constructed in the garden influenced by Buddhist tradition so outdoor furniture was essential.
Round stool design got its inspiration by a typical Chinese drum. There were several references from literature in the Ming Dynasty as a glorious era of literature, painting, poem, and music suggesting that drum stools were common in the homes and gardens of Chinese aristocrats.
Later, its design became more sophisticated with exquisite carving motifs and material embellishment during the Qing Dynasty (1636-1912). The term “鼓凳” Gǔ Dèng or drum-shaped stool was originated. The Ming and Qing Dynasties epitomised Chinese furniture making. Later, it was eventually exported to the West and popular among the American interior design in the mid of twentieth century. However, very few have remained.
