RCB Film Club’s November movie is ‘WESTEN’ (‘WEST’) an award-winning feature film from Germany.
The screening is part of the German Embassy and Goethe Institute’s activities, to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall.
Based on a book, West centers around a young widow emigrating to the Western part of Germany from the Eastern part, in the 1970’s.
Nelly Senff, a doctor of chemistry from East Berlin, decides to move, with her young son Alexej, to West Berlin, after the sudden death of her boyfriend, and to start a new life there.

It took her two years of efforts to manage this move, but once there, Nelly realizes that things are not as free and easy as she thought. She lives in a transit refugee camp, and soon learns that whether it’s food, accommodation, or job, there are bureaucratic processes to follow. These include extensive interviews. Where she was questioned by the Stasi in East Germany, she’s now intensively interrogated by the Allied Security Forces.

One particular Black officer is attracted to her. Nelly learns from him that her scientist husband may have been a spy, and may not be dead, after all. which disturbs her. The friendly attentions of a fellow ‘refugee’ Hans, make her son happy, but not her. Nelly slowly realizes that there are ‘systems’ in every country, and emigration means knowing, understanding, and accepting them.
The film is topical, because while it tells the story of a German emigrant before the Fall of the Wall, Nelly’s story resonates with the stories of  numerous refugees around the world today.
West created waves at various festivals, and actress Jordis Triebel won plaudits and awards for her powerful lead-performance.
The film event is supported by the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Bangkok, who will host a Reception after the screening.
We thank Goethe-Institut Thailand for the film screening.
German Ambassador HE Georg Schmidt will introduce the movie.
