Go on a fashion spree with a difference this month and see Warhol’s take on late 20th century couture.
Marilyn Monroe has been one of the most influential style icons of all time but she left us so soon in 1962 (before her forties). By the time when Warhol was very enthusiastic with screen prints, he took Marilyn’s image from the 1963 film Niagara and made screens of her face shortly after her death. His reputed work Marilyn Diptych with 50 repeated faces of the superstar was incarnated since then. Warhol immortalized her quintessential beauty with Pop art and later created another three Marilyn Monroe screen prints in 1967. You can see many in a flesh inside our exhibition.
Outside the art scene, this beautiful and most familiar face was reinterpreted as a distinct look on the runway of Versace in 1991. The founder of Versace was the one passionate in Warhol’s works thanks to his artistic talent in juxtaposing fashion with an art of living. The Factory was where he worked and hosted the most wanted parties of the era. This iconic dress imprinted with the faces of Marilyn and James Dean is now on display at Met Museum in New York.
This so-called Queen of Pop is a superstar and trendsetter of magnificent wardrobe and makeup who often graced magazine covers. Having Madonna on a cover of Interview magazine founded by Warhol in 1969 was without a doubt. The magazine stood among the crowd because of its interview articles unedited. Madonna was on the cover by Warhol in 1985 when she was in relationship with Jean-Michael Basquiat, a famous graffiti artist and close friend of Warhol. The magazine once published Madonna’s interview article on her boyfriend working around the clock. Warhol’s friendship with Basquiat revealed in the film Basquiat (1996) directed by the American artist and filmmaker Julian Schnabel. He also directed At Eternity’s Gate (2018) depicting Van Gogh’s life and works. This is worth in your list as David Bowie played Andy Warhol!
Liza Minelli wished to meet Andy Warhol by frequenting The Factory. Both eventually became friends in Studio 54, the legendary nightclub in New York at the time.
Liza’s ultimate talent made her recognition and deserved the Oscar she won for her role in Cabaret (1972). This award-winning performance also embodied her as a style icon of 70s. Her iconic looks have been accepted as greatest examples of inspiration for makeup artists and stylists.
Fans of Sex and the City 2 might spot her singing a cover version of Beyonce “Single Ladies”.
