Celebrating Contact Improvisation 50th anniversary
Contact improvisation (CI) is an improvisational dance form which was first developed in the United States in the 1970s by a group of dancers and athletes gathered under the impetus of choreographer and dancer Steve Paxton. It involves the exploration of one’s body in relationship to others by using the fundamentals of sharing weight, touch, and movement awareness. The dance then later spread to Europe and Asia and grew into an international community of practitioners with different emphases such as experimental dance (practice-based research dance laboratories), theatrical improvisation form, educational tool, social dancing and awareness and healing practice.
In commemoration of the 50th year anniversary of the dance form, a community of CI dancers in Bangkok gathers to share with the public an improvisational dance performance presented together with historical documentary, “Fall After Newton”. The event aims to present the dance form in its original format and aims to unpack and contextualize bodily knowledge and the principles of the practice within contemporary Thai culture.
During the post-show talk, we will open up space for a Q&A with the dancers and members of our Bangkok community who have had exposure to and training in CI.
