Diaspora
River City Bangkok proudly presents “Diaspora”, the fifth solo exhibition by Sornchai Phongsa, a contemporary artist whose work delves into the complexities of displacement through the lens of lived experience and intimate storytelling.
In “Diaspora,” displacement is explored not only as the plight of refugees or those forced to flee their homelands, but as a universal condition—an undercurrent in all our lives. Whether it’s migrants seeking economic opportunity in urban centers, individuals leaving home for education or work, or those who feel estranged within their own communities, the exhibition reflects on the emotional landscapes of dislocation. Through contemporary art, Sornsai tenderly portrays the loss, adaptation, and redefinition of self that accompanies every journey away from home.
“Diaspora” is not just an exhibition; it is an invocation of empathy, a confluence of lived histories, and a testament to the resilience of those compelled to reconstruct the very concept of ‘home’ amidst displacement. This exhibition aims not only to raise awareness of the challenges faced by displaced populations but also to inspire resilience, compassion, and a renewed appreciation for the beauty of cultural diversity. It stands as a reflection of those who have left their past behind to forge ahead into the future — whether by necessity or aspiration. I hope this work allows viewers to recognize their own connections to displacement and, in doing so, cultivate deeper understanding and solidarity. No matter who we are, where we come from, or where we are headed, we all share stories of transition. And within displacement itself, perhaps, lies the very meaning of home.
