Shake a paw if you are a dog lover like #AndyWarhol
When we told you about the adorable side of Andy Warhol and his twenty cats we received so many thumbs-up social media hits from Thailand’s cat-loving community. Dog lovers please take note: the icon of the pop art world also loved dogs.
Warhol’s affection for the four-legged pooch started in 1973 when his friend, Jed Johnson persuaded him to get a dog. Warhol’s bread of choice was a Dachshund. But his newly adopted puppy, Archie severely restricted Warhol’s movement, who at one point in time decided not to go on a trip to London simply because Archie would be alone at home.
A couple years later, Warhol got a new shorthaired Dachshund and named him Amos. The personalities of Archie and Amos were polar opposites. Archie was very social, accompanying Warhol everywhere he went while Amos preferred being at home, happily waiting for his master to return to the townhouse they all lived in: artist, dogs, wigs and antiques.
Warhol created a series of cat and dog paintings and drawings in 1976. It shows his menagerie and included a friend’s Great Dane, called Cecil. Not all of his art featuring his beloved dogs and cats are in our exhibition, but there are other animals.
The psychedelic New Jersey Cow with blue background showing in the exhibition inspired the cover of Pink Floyd’s Atom Heart Mother, the 5th album of this iconic Progressive Rock band from the UK. The original edition of Warhol’s Endangered Species series of ten animal silkscreen prints is in the final section of the exhibition not far from the Jersey Cow.
