VIVID RECOLLECTION of the Past

Pagoda Art Club and River City Bangkok proudly present VIVID RECOLLECTION of the Past, Thai artist Anchana Nangkala’s homage to Claude Monet, one of the principal artists of the Impressionist movement who has served as an important source of inspiration for her throughout her career. Her flirtation with Monet’s work began during her school years. Struggling to make ends meet as a first-year student at Silpakorn university, she saved for months in order to afford a book of his paintings. Monet’s works, even in derivative form upon the pages of a book, were potent to behold for Anchana; she has kept this book with her till today.

This year, Anchana traveled to France with her family and was, at long last, able to admire Monet’s paintings in-person at Parisian museums. Language fails to capture the rapture she experienced: the adumbrated images etched into her memory effloresced in the presence of the originals. Upon returning home, she gave expression to the indelible impressions she accrued over her trip to Paris and encounter with Monet’s oeuvre in a set of paintings of water-lily scenes– so vivid that they seem to cascade off the canvas in deluge of colors– that deviate from her usual choice of style and subject.

About the Artist

Anchana Nakala is a professor of the Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts at Prince of Songkla University, Pattani. She was born on 24th December 1974 in Nakhon Si Thammarat province. She grew up in a family of florists, to whom she owes her special kinship with flowers. Anchana began painting flora as an undergraduate student. Her early experiments with compositions that coupled complementary colors in close proximity have since become her stylistic signature. Over the years, Anchana’s paintings have been featured in group exhibitions. The opportunity for her first solo exhibition arrived in 2021: titled “The Harmony in Conflict”, the show has made her name well-known among art collectors.
