Be transported to Tate Britain in London
‘Ophelia’ is a painting of a young woman lying on her back in a small river in Denmark surrounded by a variety of flowers and plants by British artist, Sir John Everett Millais. Many have been enchanted by the beauty of this work including Spanish fashion photographer, Eugenio Recuenco who re-created Ophelia into a photograph for the 25 July lightbox at the 365º exhibition.
If you look closely into the painting, you can even feel the steady swirl of water passing over her middle. She is slowly sinking into the river. Her name is Ophelia, a character in the play Hamlet by William Shakespeare. Millais liked to paint the scene from literature as he was one of the founding members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood (later known as the Pre-Raphaelites). The group was formed to object the excessive mannerism of academic art concept. They intended to form a different standard for British art to revive parts of art back to the era before the Renaissance artists such as Raphael. This group of artists painted directly from nature itself, as truthfully as possible and with incredible attention to detail. Moreover, it was a time of industrialization and rapid urbanization which caused significant social shifts and economic stress. However, painting from literature and nature provided a retreat into the beautiful, an escape from the reality. Art can indeed heal ones’ soul especially during difficult times.
The beauty and the accurate depiction of a natural landscape in ‘Ophelia’ allowed it to be considered as one of the most important works of the mid-nineteenth century. The painting’s influence can be seen in the work of other renowned artists including Salvador Dali.
The painting is displayed at Tate Britain, London. However, no need to fly to London to see this painting. You can see the re-creation of Ophelia in a photograph of 25 July at the 365º exhibition when we reopen.
