Interpreting 365’s May 6 photograph

Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin was the German general and later inventor, was a pioneer of transatlantic flight. He built giant gas-filled balloons for trans-Atlantic air travel, the largest of which Zeppelin called ’Hindenburg’.

On May 6 1937, the Hindenburg, fuelled by hydrogen, burst into flames when attempting to dock at Lakerhurst, New Jersey, USA. With 97 passengers onboard and 30 losing their lives, it marked as the end of travel by hydrogen fuelled aircraft. The horrifying accident was captured by reporters on film and by radio reporter Herb Morrison’s account broadcast on NBC the next day. From that day, all such airships used helium instead of hydrogen.

Horrific Hindenburg accident and stunning photo also gave an English rock band formed in London in 1968 its name. The photograph was used on the cover of Led Zeppelin’s debut album.

365 opens to the public on 1 June on the 2nd floor of River City Bangkok.
