Is a photograph of 8 August about Pinocchio?
Besides 365 photographs in their own lightboxes at the 365º exhibition, each photograph is also inspired by world events, current affairs, disasters, mankind’s achievements and more. For the photograph of 8 August, it is a re-creation Pinocchio, a childhood beloved character for many.
Pinocchio or a wooden puppet whose nose grows when he lies is from a classic children’s story that we are familiar with since young from the 1940 Disney film Pinocchio. It is a tale of a toy maker named Geppetto who doesn’t have a wife nor children. One day, he has an idea to make a little wooden puppet whom he names Pinocchio. After he wishes upon a star, the little wooden puppet is brought to life. Pinocchio must prove himself brave, truthful and unselfish, in order to fulfill his dream of becoming a real boy.
However, the original story of Pinocchio is different from the Disney adaptation. Pinocchio is actually a protagonist of the children’s novel, The Adventures of Pinocchio (1883) by an Italian writer, Carlo Collodi. In this novel, Pinocchio is a naughty boy with bad behaviors. He does not listen to anyone so is often in trouble or makes lots of mistakes.
Carlo Collodi portrayed Pinocchio in such a manner because a discussion in the education system of how the children should learn from was being carried out at that time. One psychologist suggested that children should learn from their own mistakes. As a result, the author portrayed the consequences of how children learned only from their own mistakes when they don’t listen to the adults.
Even though the characters of Pinocchio in the original and Disney are dramatically different, he is one of the most recognizable character that is loved by many people around the world including Spanish fashion photographer, Eugenio Recuenco who has re-created Pinocchio in a photograph of 8 August at the 365º exhibition. Whether Pinocchio in the exhibition is inspired by the original story or the Disney adaptation, let’s find out in the exhibition. We are glad that we are able to extend this wonderful photo exhibition until 15 October 2021!
