The wall that could separate ideologies but couldn’t block the power of love

Many of you might get confused with the name of the 365º exhibition. Is it 365 days or 360 degrees? In fact, Spanish fashion photographer Eugenio Recuenco intends to let the audience decide whether the name of the exhibition refers to 365 days or 360 degrees as Recuenco captured memories from all over the world and placed them into the photographs in the exhibition. For the photograph for 14 August, Recuenco takes us to explore the Berlin wall in Germany.

Nowadays, Germany is a united country. However, back to when World War II came to an end in 1945, the country was divided between the Western Allies led by the United States and the Soviet Union in the East. To prevent people from escaping to the West, the Soviet built a wall – the Berlin Wall which sealed off free passage between East and West Berlin. Berlin wall eventually came down on 9 November 1989 leading Germany to be a united country.

The story of the Berlin wall reminds us about a German film named, Good Bye, Lenin. What makes this film interesting is that it celebrates the power of maternal love within the tension in the East side in very engaging ways. The story is about a young man and his socialist mother. In the film, his mother suffered a fatal shock coma over the months when the Berlin wall was coming down and woke up in united Germany.  But as she was so fragile, her son must keep her from learning that her beloved nation of East Germany had disappeared. The young man did his best to pretend that nothing had changed such as creating a fake tv show which still presented news from the East. Besides the different ideologies between the east and the west, the audience will still feel the love and the bond between the mother and herson that can’t be blocked by the political ideologies or the wall. It would be a moving film to watch with your mom.

Even Germany is a united country now, people will not forget the time when the country was divided. You can also experience the two sides of Germany in photographs of 13 and 14 August in the 365º exhibition. However, which photograph represents the east or the west, let’s find out in the exhibition.
