Treasure of Photography

Camera Collection, a newly opened film camera gallery at River City Bangkok, is a paradise for photographers and all film camera collectors. With RCB Photographers’ Gallery on the same floor, the Camera Collection is a gallery of photography where you can learn about film photography, buy a beautifully crafted film camera, or sit down to talk with the owner, Mr. Eddie (Siu Yun Cheong) who says. “… buying a camera does need a little bit of talk”.

As you approach you will see showcases lined up behind the windows, inside an impressive collection of cameras including a Leica M3 Olive, Rolleiflex 2.8F, Hasselblad Super wide C, Leica M summilux 50 mm f1.4, and Nikon F. There is also a library of books about photography and film cameras, some of them are extremely rare, available for you to read.

In Hong Kong, once Eddie graduated in Graphic Design, he worked as a designer for a short period. But his passion for film photography was profound and he eventually became a professional photographer, predominantly in the fields of interior design and architecture.

Opening his own film camera shop was a long-held dream. In Hong Kong, he spent his lunch breaks at film camera shops talking with the owners. So frequent were his visits to one shop in particular that the shop’s owner offered him a part-time job. Eddie spent the next five years working in the shop, gaining experience and knowledge.

When moving to Thailand from Hong Kong 20 years ago, Eddie was introduced to Mr. Surat Osathanugrah, the former President of The Royal Photographic Society of Thailand and an avid film camera collector. With a common interest in film cameras the pair often meet to exchange knowledge.Founded in 1996, Eddie opened his first film camera shop in the Thaniya Building in Silom. Since then, the shop was relocated several times to where it is now, on the 2nd floor of River City Bangkok.

Speaking about his passion, Eddy says “I think learning is a never-ending journey. We can learn something new every single day. I have learned a lot from Mr. Surat.”

Camera Collection in Room 243 (2nd floor) is not your typical film camera shop. Apart from buying, selling, cleaning, and repairing film cameras, Eddie is happy to share information and stories with visitors. Also, if you are interested in film photography, Eddie leads film photography workshops.
