#UNBOXING365 Man landing on the moon

Besides the photographs which are backlit in their own light-box in an area of about 1,200 square meters, 365° exhibition is a diary that will take you on a journey of 365 days as Eugenio Recuenco reflects some of the unforgettable events of our recent history in this exhibition. For the photograph of 20 July, it presents one of the most important events in our human history because it is the day that men from the planet Earth first set foot on moon.

Going to the moon was challenging and yet important due to the fact that the United States wanted to achieve superior spaceflight capability against the Soviet Union in the space race between them during the Cold War. On September 12, 1962, United States President John F. Kennedy delivered a speech ‘We choose to go to the moon’ and set an ambitious goal of sending an American safely to the Moon before the end of the decade.

Just seven years after the speech, on July 20, 1969, NASA’s Apollo 11 mission landed the first humans on the moon. Astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin descended to the lunar surface while Michael Collins flew the spacecraft over it. Armstrong uttered his iconic words, ‘that’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind,’ as he stepped onto the moon. Moreover, it is estimated that over 530 million people watched the live broadcast of the moon landing on television. The astronauts returned safely to the earth on July 24, 1969.

Since we were born, we looked at the moon upon the sky and imagined how the moon was like. Certain cultures perceived the moon as the god. However, Apollo 11 mission proves that the moon is Earth’s only natural satellite 384,400 km away from our planet. Perhaps there will be more important steps in our history in the near future but no one knows when it is going to happen. We hope that during this difficult time, the story of a man landing on the moon will inspire us as it has proven that human can realise dreams that people from the past would never believe possible.
