The Fine Art of Silk
“Thai art and culture will remain with us forever if we learn how to integrate inherited wisdom with modern knowledge and appreciate what our ancestors created.” This is the philosophy of Chabatik, a premium silk boutique that conceptualizes “The Fine Art of Silk” with stories well woven into every single piece for more than 30 years of establishment.
From local community to new development
Khun Siriporn Sirikulpisuch, co-founder with Khun Sasiwan Dumrongsiri, Designer of the Year 2004, applied her knowledge from the Department of Applied Art Decorative at Silpakorn University and her thesis on original woven fabric crafted by local people in Northeast Thailand to create Chabatik. She developed it into a modern pattern which was different from typical fabrics. When stepping into Chabatik boutique, you will be impressed with the use of different shades of colors especially pastel as well as black and white. Despite using a traditional loom, the result from the development of production process and local weaving technique have been breathtaking. To meet all requirements and bring the best quality to Chabatik boutique, Khun Sasiwan sketched designs on paper, computerized them, and advised local villagers of Hua Kee Noo and Phu Pha Man in Konkaen province to hand woven the pieces.
The secret behind Chabatik silk
Mud-Mee silk of Chabatik is distinguished among others and known as “Mud-Mee Son” (Double Ikat) initiated by the brand 20 years ago and it was first introduced in the exhibition hosted in 1994. “Mud-Mee Son” is crafted from a special technique that creates an outstanding dimension. A different use of color combination contributes to a mélange of new colors. This defines “The Fine Art of Silk”. Chabatik silk is not just for ready-to-wear nor accessories like scarf or shawl but a piece of art. Some foreign customers prefer purchasing them for headboard ideas, home decoration and art collection.
Local wisdom, international pride
Knowledge, creativity and passion for over 3 decades have resulted in several domestic and international awards offered by Department of Industry Promotion, Ministry of Industry in 1992, UNESCO – AHPADA (The ASEAN Handicraft Promotion and Development Association) in 2003-2006 and 2010, and World Crafts Council Asia Pacific Region in 2016.
Recently, Chabatik was invited to virtually join TENUN FASHION WEEK 2021 on 15-17 October celebrating handwoven textiles and weaving communities of Southeast Asia.
Chabatik silk is the pride of “The Fine Art of Silk” for you to discover in the boutique located in Room 186 on the 1st floor of River City Bangkok.
