Frida Kahlo’s fashion statements
Take the lead from Frida who famously used fashion as an extension of her artistic narrative. After a year of restraint, now is the time to throw open your wardrobe and dress up to farewell 2020.
This month RCB Film Club is thrilled to bring to screen a truly wonderful documentary film about Frida Kahlo, one of the most famous female artists of her time. Frida: with her unique style, connected eyebrows, and uncaged spirit. To prepare you for the film, let’s trace her influences on the fashion world! While Frida Kahlo used vibrant colors in her paintings, her real life was not in rosy hues. She was disabled by polio as a child and had 30 operations. She expressed her suffering in a most straightforward way, portrayed in the painting, ‘The Broken Column’. Frida covered her crippled body with long dresses, something her school friends often mocked her for.Kahlo’s self-portrait ‘Velvet Dress’ painted in 1926, shows the European Renaissance of her sensibility for fashion. Frida, looking sophisticated and calm, the painting was actually a token of love to reconcile with her dearest Alejandro. In a letter to Alex, Frida wrote: “Alex, your ‘Boticeli’ has also become very sad, but I told her that until you come back, she should be the ‘sound asleep one.”
Most importantly, Frida celebrated traditional Mexican clothing though many of her most notable paintings created throughout her life.
Be inspired by Frida Kahlo and dress up for the documentary. Frida Kahlo screenings are at 14:00 on Saturday of 5 and 19 December in RCB Forum, 2nd floor River City Bangkok.
