People and Their World
In a faraway land where few have set foot, Thai photographer, Jatenipat Ketpradit or JKBoy has brought his beloved camera to venture into challenging terrains facing harsh weather to capture the lives of tribal people around the world.
At the heart of the Altai Mountains where the borders of Kazakhstan and Mongolia meet with a temperature of -30 degrees Celsius, JKBoy encountered with the “Burgedchin” or “Eagle Hunters”, a group of hunters that inherited the use of golden eagles to hunt prey for more than 250 years.
Amid the falling snow at the Mongolia–Russia border, JKBoy encountered with the “Tsaatan”, one of the last remaining groups of nomadic reindeer herders that have maintained this tradition for thousands of years. Nowadays, there are only 44 families remaining in this group.
On the remote island of Siberut in Indonesia, JKBoy met the Mentawai people. They are among the oldest tribes in Indonesia who specialize in decorative tattoos. They are also known for the belief in animism. In this, they can connect with the spirit in nature through shamans. Animal skulls have been used in the rituals and hung in their houses to protect the residents from evil spirits.
Through the center of the African continent in Ethiopia, JKBoy traveled to the mountains and forest of Savanna to photograph indigenous people in the Cradle of Humankind.
Through the lenses of JKBoy, he has gathered the stories from his adventure leading to the photography exhibition, People and Their World.
To capture these photographs, JKBoy had contacted and lived with people from different tribes, overcoming the difficult areas, harsh weather, and cultural and language differences to present the lives and spirits of each tribe realistically.
This series of photographs recently won Photographer of the Year 2021, as well as three gold medals (Amateur Photographer of the Year 2021, Gold Award PEOPLE Portrait, Gold Award PEOPLE Culture) and a Bronze Award Architecture at the One Eyeland Awards 2021.
