SELF Tarot Reading Workshop

RCB Experimental Art Lab proudly presents the “SELF Tarot Reading” workshop in collaboration with Stray Cat Tarot Studio. This workshop aims to unlock the inspiration behind card design and delve into the art of Tarot reading. Led by Kanitsart Semanopparat (Chang), the visionary artist behind the Stray Cat Tarot deck, this event offers a unique opportunity to explore the intricacies of card creation and divination learned over a continuous four-year journey.

The art of Tarot has a rich history, standing alongside global societies for centuries. It has been translated across languages and applied across disciplines. Yet, the essence of its stories remains unchanged. Understanding Tarot is akin to understanding a friend we converse with – once we grasp the meaning this friend is trying to convey, we unravel the mysteries of Tarot just like we understand our friend.

In this workshop, Kanitsart will narrate tales of inspiration and experiences in crafting Tarot cards for beginners eager to explore the art. It will unveil the structure and methods of interpreting Tarot cards in everyday life. Moreover, there will be discussions unraveling the meanings behind all 78 cards, along with hands-on opportunities for participants to try their hand at reading Tarot cards independently!

This journey into the realm of divination will introduce you to new companions, Tarot cards will become your confidants – ready to consult and converse with you on every matter!

About the Speaker

Kanitsard Semanopparat finds solace in sketching animals, particularly cats, as a personal passion. His initial Tarot deck was a tale woven around these feline friends, long before he established his own studio. It wasn’t until years later, when the opportunity arose, that he created another Tarot deck featuring his beloved cats.

The first Tarot card he sketched commenced with The Fool, symbolizing a wanderer, a lover of freedom, unbounded by ties. This card was part of his initial deck, woven around feline tales. Hence, the card’s initial meaning of ‘stray cat’ became the cornerstone of the Stray Cat Tarot. Cats, creatures linked to mysticism. Tarot readings, and ancient arts, have adorned many tales, especially the black cat. Choosing the cat as his emblem perfectly resonated with all the artist sought to convey.

His augural deck was named the ‘Stray Cat Tarot’, a title that became synonymous with his studio’s identity.

The Stray Cat Tarot deck garnered immense popularity both in Thailand and abroad, serving as a catalyst for the mathematician to create his second deck, LUNALAPIN, featuring rabbits. This deck, too, gained remarkable acclaim, with supporters spanning over 30 countries worldwide.

With abundant support and an affection for drawing adorable animals, the mathematician dedicatedly produced artworks continuously for four years. Five decks of Tarot cards emerged from this commitment, providing him with abundant experiences and knowledge in the realm of Tarot science. His expertise in Tarot science was distilled into beginner-friendly books, condensing the complexity for newcomers. His mission? To ensure everyone interested understands that Tarot reading isn’t daunting – it’s something anyone can do with ease.
