The Robust Flowers

“The Robust Flowers” is an exhibition that opens a portal from the real world, and its strictures and social expectations, to a fantastical dimension abloom in beauty and color, where dwells a human species with an incongruous appearance: born with a head framed by delicate petals and a muscular body, these beings refute the prevailing belief that “flowers are fragile organisms circumscribed by their decorative function”, and pose the question:

“If I was born fragile, should I allow that to define me?”

“The Robust Flowers” is Bookbank’s debut solo exhibition, which titrates life experiences, accrued in over a decade immersed in the art world, that have honed his technical expertise and personal philosophy, in a collection of paintings inspired by his love of flowers. Though flowers often signify joy, vitality and beauty, Bookbank observes that these qualities are inseparable  from their innate frailty: with dainty leaves and spindly stems, flowers are not unlike human beings, who are born with flaws and imperfections. If these flowers could reject the stereotypes imposed on them, he wonders, and instead desired to grow tall and strong like a majestic tree, what would they have to do? The question was the initial spark that evolved into the idea of a powerful species of flower-kind that had acquired great strength and skill through grueling training, a reflection of how we humans will strive relentlessly until we achieve success.
