Walk in the footsteps of Paul Cézanne
Paul Cézanne was born on this day (19 January). He might be on of the lesser known of artists but his paintings achieve some of the highest prices these days. ‘The Card Players’, one in a series of five, broke all records when it sold in 2011to the Royal Family of Qatar for a price estimated at $250 million.
To celebrate Cézanne’s birthday, we are going to transport you to Aix-en-Provence, a place where he was born and died. Aix-en-Provence is a picturesque town in the South of France. Born to a wealthy family, he was a classmate of Émile Zola who later became a famous writer. Zola suggested him to settle in Paris and joined the first exhibition called “Salon of the Refused” in 1863 because his works were rejected by the Academy of Fine Arts.
After a short period living as an artist in the capital, Cézanne returned to his hometown where he inherited by his late father’s estate. He loved spending time outside the town’s walls, liberating his soul painting the view of Mont Saint Victoire. Captivated by its beauty, Cézanne created 44 oil paintings and other 43 watercolours.
In 1902 Cézanne set up a studio “Atelier des Lauves” on the hilltop of Lauvres. It was here he painted until his dying day in 1906. Today, his studio looks exactly as he left it.
Cézanne is a Post-Impressionist artist distinguished among others because of his preference in working inside the studio rather than painting outside. Some of his greatest works created in his Lauvres studio are now hanging in the some of the most famous museums around the world. One such painting, ’The Bathers or Les Grandes Baigneuses’, is held by the Philadelphia Museum of Art, USA.
If you visit Aix-en-Provence you can follow in the footsteps of one of the town’s my famous residents. Plaques with “C” placed in the pavements guide visitors to places frequented by Paul Cézanne. Such was his influence that Pablo Picasso called him “The Father of Us All.”
