Imperfection

Imperfection
“Nobody is perfect”
This is a classic quote that has been greatly recognized. In spite of the fact that most people seem to concur with this quote, they continue to chase perfection and struggle to hide their flaws, especially in today’s society in which the world is becoming highly competitive and individuals always strive to be the best.
Imperfection is a group exhibition of 5 talented female artists: Jang Onanong, Pacharaporn Baiposuwan (Jeentee), Pang Torsuwan, Suwannee Sarakana, and Kannika Jansuwan, who all have experience with ‘Imperfection’ in their personal lives, as an individual, as an artist, or as a mother. What makes this group show so remarkable is that each artist, through the strength of their brushstrokes, reveals previously hidden emotions and memories.
The stories are narrated through each artist’s distinct style and character propelling the five series of artworks: “A Girl in a Magical Mushroom Land”; “A Girl with a Hidden Identity”; “Little Mermaids in the Garden”; “Wonderful Flowers”; and “Half-human with Supernatural Powers” which are outstanding in their vividness and creativity.
The artists also encourage everyone to embrace their own ‘Imperfection,’ since they truly believe that accepting flaws is the path to true perfection.

Venue: RCB Galleria 4 on 2nd floor

Jang Onanong

“Imperfection is seen with the eyes, but perfection is seen with the heart.”

Jang Onanong (b.1983) is a Prachuap Khiri Khan-based artist who creates paintings and sculptures featuring a girl with large, expressive sparkling eyes. Her paintings are inspired by the joy she sees in her daily life, her childhood memories of growing up in a home with only women, and societal events. Jang has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions both nationally and internationally, including a solo exhibition titled ‘Imperfection’ at Bangkok Art and Culture Center (2015), a group exhibition titled “Unknown Asian Art Exchange” in Osaka, Japan (2016), “Live painting and artist talk” at Universitas Negeri Jakarta, Indonesia (2015), “Divas” exhibition at River City Bangkok (2018), and a solo exhibition titled “Mei Hua” (2019).
Concept
Jang’s “A Girl in Magical Mushroom Land” series is inspired by the Super Mario video game, which she compares it to real life. Jang believes that there have been numerous occasions when we have had to encounter challenges and may fail. In life, despite our best efforts, we will never achieve perfection, and we must embrace the fact that “there is no such thing as perfect.” Jang, on the other hand, is positive that we humans will overcome all that life throws at us and triumph over our constraints because of the special strength that we all possess: “our own heart”.

Pacharaporn Baiposuwan (Jeentee)

“Imperfection inspires unlimited dreams and imaginations.”

Jeentee (b.1983) holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Visual Arts with a specialization in Thai arts from Silpakorn University. Her paintings are influenced by Buddhist principles such as the trinity, impermanence, non-existence. Jeentee’s first solo show, “Circle of Life,” was held at Bangkok Art and Culture Center in 2018. She has also attended four shows in Japan. Today, Jeentee gets new inspirations from her two children as she continues to paint.
The “Wonderful Flower” series is inspired by motherhood and the philosophy of Wabi-Sabi, which emphasizes the beauty in imperfection and agrees with Buddhist philosophy on impermanence, no-identity, and non-existence. Jeentee’s paintings are a mix of the subconscious and the conscious, as she begins by visualizing the images in her mind before drawing on paper. Her brush strokes aren’t perfect due to the unpredictable nature of watercolors. However, it does offer feelings, sentiments, dimensions, textures, as well as thrilling senses and subconscious experiences.

Pang Torsuwan
“We will be free when we embrace our own flaws.”

Pang Torsuwan (b.1981) is a self-taught artist based in Bangkok. She obtained a master’s degree in marketing from Monash University, Australia and started her career in advertising. Since Pang always has a passion for art, she has been participating in many art courses as well as learning by herself. Until 2017, Pang decided to focus solely on fine art and has dedicated herself to oil painting. Currently, Pang works as a full-time artist. Most of her paintings are influenced by nature and the complexity of women in different aspects.
Concept
The Japanese notion of Wabi-Sabi, which encourages us to appreciate imperfection, inspired “The Girl with a Hidden Identity.” The artist conveys this subject with overlapping pictures of females representing many aspects of life. Pang believes that everyone has a flaw, whether it be a weakness, or an unflattering look. While we try to hide our defects, wabi-sabi taught us to accept and embrace them. When we accept our own flaws, we are emancipated and can genuinely appreciate the beauty of life.

Suwannee Sarakana
“To find something new, search for the interesting in the imperfect.”

Suwannee Sarakana (b.1976), an Isan artist originally from Ubon Ratchathani, has been drawing ever since she was a young girl. Despite coming from an agricultural background, her family always supported her artistic ambitions, and she eventually earned a master’s degree from Silpakorn University’s Faculty of Painting, Sculpture, and Graphic Arts. Her paintings mostly depict scenes of rural Thai families that are close to one another and full of love. Suwannee continued to develop art after she graduated and has presented her artworks in over 100 shows such as UOB’s show at Art Stage Singapore, The City of Hillsboro Glenn & Viola Walters Cultural Arts Center at Oregon state USA.

Concept
Suwannee’s 6-year-old daughter has been a big inspiration for her artworks during the last two years. Her experience as a parent taught her the importance of adults treating children with the love and care they deserve. The ‘Little Mermaid in the Garden’ series is a metaphor for young children who imagine and fantasize about a beautiful world. Suwannee, on the other hand, believes that even if we cannot provide a flawless atmosphere for our children. They can, however, live happily and safely in our society if we adults show children enough love, care, and attention.

Kannika Jansuwan

“The magical power of art makes a flawed world perfect.

Born in 1985, Kannika Jansuwan has always had a passion for art. With a second-class honors degree, she completed her studies at Silpakorn University’s Faculty of Painting, Sculpture, and Graphic Arts. Kannika has immersed herself in the professional art world after completing her studies. Her exposure to many approaches has taught her that the essence of art is not a particular style but rather the freedom to express oneself through it. At the moment, Kannika is concentrating on using her life experiences as inspiration for art.
Concept
Kannika has always been fascinated by heroic figures, whether they be from comic books or ancient mythology. Oftentimes, the protagonists in these stories are imperfect and vulnerable. Some of them may work tirelessly to improve their flaws. Then, they suddenly gained a supernatural skill that made them significantly more powerful than other people. But after realizing one’s newfound strength, they must strive to reach their fullest potential. Until, at last, they reach a turning point in their lives.
Kannika praised these people’s efforts to better themselves. As a result, it inspired a series of works titled “Half-human with Supernatural powers,” which presents some of renowned figures such as “The human-bird hybrid,” a symbol of the Egyptian flying spirit, and “Sailor Moon”, a heroine from Japanese manga with her fresh interpretation of their spiritual journey.
