Renoir and His Romantic Life

Pierre-Auguste Renoir rose to fame for his iconic style of painting fleeting moments of Parisian’s lifestyles. Different from other Impressionist artists, Renoir loved to paint human figure, especially women, portraying their charm and delicate movement. Amongst all the models in Renoir’s paintings was his own wife, Aline Victorine Charigot whom he loved dearly.

The romantic relationship between Renoir and Charigot began in 1879 when he invited her to model for his paintings. For Renoir, she was perfection: not too thin, rosy-cheeked, and with skin that “takes the light.”

Many maybe familiar with ‘Country Dance’ (1883) which shows a dancing couple under a chestnut tree. The woman holds a fan in her right hand, her smiling face looking towards the viewer. The scene is bathed in a bright and warm light. In the painting is a friend of Renoir, and the woman is Aline, who later in 1890 married Renoir. With their three sons the family moved to settle down in the city of Essoyes.

Saturday 13 and Saturday 27 February, RCB Film Club presents ‘Renoir – Revered and Reviled’, a documentary about the artist’s life and his painting techniques.
