Women’s Fashion in the Time of Renoir

Fashion trends are constantly changing – from season to season, year to year. Fashion is influenced by culture of the day, and also by looking back in time, periods such as Impressionism. With that in mind, here is an interesting story behind the woman’s fashion depicted in Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s  painting, ‘La Loge’ (1874).

The theatre audience is one of Renoir’s favourite subjects. ‘La Loge’ shows a couple in the audience watching a performance. The models in this paintings are Nini Lopez, Renoir’s favourite model and Edmond, his own brother. Nini’s black and white silk dress and blouse was considered fashionable for women in 1870s. Her accessories – earrings, pearl necklaces, gloves, and the flowers clipped in her hair – are elegant and luxurious.

Renoir’s paintings ‘Woman at the Piano’ (1875-1876) and ‘Nini in the Garden’ (1876) are also the great examples of the fashion during the late 19th century.

If you want to learn more about women’s fashion and Renoir’s passion in paintings, the documentary film ‘RENOIR: REVERED AND REVILED’ is a great opportunity for you to learn more about him and his works.
