Be transported to the Louvre in Paris

‘The Raft of the Medusa’ by the French Romantic painter, Jean-Louis André Théodore Géricault is Eugenio Recuenco’s inspiration for the photograph of 25 June at the exhibition, 365º.

Romanticism is an artistic movement that originated in Europe towards the end of the 18th century. The movement emphasized intense emotion as an aesthetic experience, placing new emphasis on such feelings as fear, horror and terror. ‘The Raft of the Medusa’ is generally considered an icon of Romanticism.

The painting depicts the aftermath of the wreck of the Medusa, a French naval frigate, which ran aground off the coast of Senegal in July 1816. Due to a shortage of lifeboats, those who were left behind had to build a raft for the 149 people. This resulted in a bloody 13 days odyssey in which only 15 people survived. Those who survived endured starvation and dehydration and practiced cannibalism. The event became an international scandal, in part because its cause was widely attributed to the incompetence of the French captain.

The painting is displayed at the Louvre Museum, Paris and its influence can be seen in the work of other renowned artists including Eugène Delacroix.
