What is the photograph of May 1 about?
For May 1, you need to open yourself to the meanderings of an artist.
Around the world, May 1 is a celebration of the hard work and dedication of the worker – Labour Day. Workers around the world wear overalls when working. The Spanish word for overalls is ‘mono’. In Spanish ‘el mono’ means apes.
So, for the May 1 installation, Spanish fashion photographer Eugenio Recuenco thinks of apes, which leads him to think of renowned director, Stanley Kubrick whose best well-known film is one of the best Sci-Fi films of all time, 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968).
2001: A Space Odyssey was inspired by science writer, Arthur C. Clarke’s 1948 short story, “The Sentinel”. The film begins in the prehistoric African veldt, a time before humans had evolved from the apes. Later, a colony of apes comes across an alien monolith, a large, solid black box standing alone on the landscape. The movie skips to the year 2001 where three astronauts with the computer called ‘HAL’.They are on a mission to Jupiter to explore an alien monolith.
In the photograph of May 1, Recuenco pays a tribute to Kubrick by putting an alien monolith in the photograph. Workers, like the astronauts, examine the strange object.
